Those Cows Walked a Mile

[Verse 1] Two ponds down to mud and stone, The south field split like an old cracked bowl. We hauled the jugs from the freezer chest, Blue caps, frost on the plastic necks. [Chorus] Those cows walked a mile for water, Slow through the heat with their heads held low. Frozen milk jugs, cold as morning, Melted just enough to let it flow. When the ponds ran shallow and the grass turned brown, A little ice-cold water kept them going somehow. [Verse 2] Dust came curling off the lane, A barn cat watched from the loading chain. They crowded close, then took their time, While the sun leaned hard on the fence-wire line. [Chorus] Those cows walked a mile for water, Slow through the heat with their heads held low. Frozen milk jugs, cold as morning, Melted just enough to let it flow. When the ponds ran shallow and the grass turned brown, A little ice-cold water kept them going somehow. [Bridge] By dusk, the empty jugs rolled in the bed, The last light caught the dust they’d shed. No rain came down, no clouds moved through, But every thirsty mouth got something cool. [Final Chorus] Those cows walked a mile for water, Slow through the heat with their heads held low. Frozen milk jugs, cold as morning, Melted just enough to let it flow. When the ponds ran shallow and the grass turned brown, A little ice-cold water kept them going somehow. [Outro] Two ponds low, one long mile, And cold water waiting for a little while.
