mama letters from prison
Dear Mama, hope this letter finds you doin’ well,
Sorry I ain’t wrote sooner, these long days blur in this cell.
I’ve been workin’ every daylight, seven days without a break,
Guess what, Mama, I moved again—
New address on the envelope, okay?
I got your money slip yesterday,
Thank you, Lord knows I needed that,
Say, Mama, what about them wedding pictures?
You reckon you’ll still send those back?
Chorus
I’m just a boy behind these bars, tryin’ hard to keep the faith,
This place can bend a man’s soul, Mama, twist him outta shape.
I pray when I walk out free someday, temptation won’t be strong,
‘Cause church will be my hangout,
Where my broken heart belongs.
Verse 2
I was kinda disappointed this Wednesday afternoon,
Supposed to see the parole board, but they canceled it too soon.
Does Mary still come around there?
I wrote her, she ain’t replied,
Are her and Larry still together,
Or is that another goodbye?
Funny how a place like this can change a man’s way,
Some come out straightened up,
